What's New In Microsoft Office 2021?
Two weeks after the release of Office LTSC 2021, the new version of Office that isn't a subscription Office suite for businesses, Microsoft has released Office 2021 for students, consumers, and small businesses. The enterprise and consumer office 2021 versions share a similar set of new features. Let's begin by looking at the distinctions between Office subscription and non-subscription versions.
For years now, Microsoft has been pushing the subscription version of its office suitecalled Office 365 or Microsoft 365, depending on the license in comparison to the non-subscription version, which it refers to as the "perpetual" version of Office. Office 365/Microsoft 365 users pay recurring charges to use the software, while buyers of the perpetual version pay a one-time fee and retain it forever.
When Office 2016 was first released in late 2015, the perpetual version and the Office 365 version had the identical features. Both versions quickly were different. Microsoft started adding new features to Office 365, which the perpetual Office 2016 version did not get. When Microsoft Office 2019 was released three years later, it came with some, but not by any means all, of the features that Office 365 had at that time. Since the time it has been it has been perpetual Office 2019 has remained static as Office 365/Microsoft365 has been getting new features. Microsoft even released an ad campaign denigring Office 2019 in comparison to Microsoft Office 365.
Real-time co-authoring
While Microsoft trumpeted live collaboration as an important feature of Microsoft Office 2016, it turned out that the full live editing experience in real-time (what Microsoft calls "co-authoring") was reserved for Office 365 subscribers. Non-subscribers could utilize the PowerPoint 2016 and Word 2016 desktop clients to collaborate with other people. But, it was a cumbersome method to group collaborate. You had to save the shared document in order to share the changes with others and to view their edits. It was necessary to use the less-powerful online versions of Word or PowerPoint for the ability to view actual changes in real-time. The Excel desktop client in 2016 didn't offer live collaboration to non-subscribers.
In Microsoft Office 2019, real-time co-authoring did come to Word but not to
Excel or PowerPoint. Non-subscribers had to continue using Excel Online and
PowerPoint Online for co-authoring in real time.
